Steps to use Mobile Number Portability in India 2011

Rules and Regulations regarding Mobile Number Portability:
Mobile customers has to give nominal fee (Rs 19/- ) to swap between operators.
Post-paid customer has clear all unpaid money before changing.
Pre-paid customer will lose all the outstanding balance as it won’t be moved forward.
The procedure will take utmost seven working days and the customer will be offered to cancel his request to port within 24 hours.
Mobile service will be stopped for near about 2-3 hrs in the period of swapping process.
Once ported, a customer will not be allowed to change another service provider before 90 days.

Steps to follow for Mobile Number Portability (MNP):
You have to send an SMS to 1900 in following type: PORT 9822XXXXXX
where 9822XXXXXX is your number.
And after that you will receive an SMS reply which includes a distinctive porting code from existing subscriber.
Put request to new customer through this distinctive code and this code will remain valid for few days. One has to completed the application and submit all applicable documents once more to new customer.

Number portability will be available for every GSM Mobile service proder of India that will contains Vodafone, Airtel, IDEA, Aircell, Uninor, BSNL, Reliance, Videocon, and etc.

Soundminer ANDROID Trojan Is A Frightening Look At Security Holes

Security researchers have come up with a very scary proof-of-concept bit of Android malware that shows how, even if you're very careful about what access rights you grant to apps, you may still find yourself vulnerable.

The attack, prepared by a group consisting of personnel from the City University of Hong Kong and Indiana University Bloomington, is made up of two separate trojan apps. One uses the processing power of your phone to steal data from you in a way that you might not have thought possible, while the other takes advantage of Android's design to ferry that data off your phone without detection. The team calls its creation Soundminer.

The first half of the attack goes after your phone's voice connection. Usually, we think of cyber-thieves using keyloggers or network sniffers to steal account details, and assume that voice calls are generally safe. By masquerading as an app that helps you record parts of calls, to use as voice memos later, the trojan tricks you into letting it listen-in. Then it uses a combination of DTMF touch-tone decoding along with voice recognition to identify any credit card numbers you say or enter.

Since both apps are supposed to look legit, the first one doesn't ask you for permissions to use the network, making it seem like whatever data is collected would be stuck on your phone. The second app, called Deliverer, can appear to be anything that would have a legitimate need to use wireless network access. In order to get your credit card numbers from the first app to the second, the pair manipulates commonly-accessible Android settings, hiding the transport of the data in that manipulation. Think about it like this: you could send a secret message to someone you never meet by visiting the same room, one after the other. By adjusting the ceiling fan on each visit to high, medium, or low speed, based on a pre-determined pattern, you could share information between the two of you without actually leaving any messages in the room.

If nothing else, Soundminer serves as reminder that, even when you follow all good advice for limiting app permissions, and use your head about spotting suspicious app behavior, you're ultimately putting your trust in the app's author not to do anything nefarious.

Samsung Announces 640-Gigabyte 2.5-inch Hard Disk Drive for High-end Mobile PCs

Seoul, Korea — September 9, 2009: Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a world leader in digital consumer electronics and information technology, today announced its new 640-Gigabyte (GB) 2.5-inch Spinpoint M7 internal hard disk drive. The new 640GB hard drive, now the top-density drive of the popular M7 family, has an areal density of 516-Gigabit per square inch for each 320GB platter, which is a 28 percent increase per platter over Samsung’s previous density-leading 500GB hard drive. Samsung’s new Spinpoint M7 model is designed for high-end mobile computing applications requiring greater shock resistance without a compromise in performance.

“With the addition of the new internal drive to the M7 series, our customers will get the best viable combination of density, performance and reliability that is essential for high-end notebooks and mobile applications,” said C.H. Lee, vice president, Storage sales & marketing, Samsung Electronics. “Samsung maximizes the density level of its platters to enhance the reliability and stability of its internal hard drives.”

Increasing the areal density of 516-Gigabit per square inch raises the total drive capacity without adding additional platters. By maximizing capacity without increasing mechanical parts, the two-platter 640GB drive has lower power consumption levels and higher operational stability compared to drives with a higher number of platters.

The new M7 drive offers a shock resistance level of 400G (2ms) in operation mode and 900G (1ms) when the power is off. An optimized system-on-chip controller reduces the power consumption in both seek and idle modes to the lowest level among comparable drives.

The Spinpoint M7 utilizes Samsung’s proprietary SilentSeek™ and NoiseGuard™ technologies to minimize noise-levels during drive operation. The halogen-free drive complies with the European Union’s Directive on the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (RoHS).

Kodak intros 1080p pocket camcorder

Kodak already has two 720p-capable pocket camcorders under its belt, but now the firm’s upped its game with the unveiling of a full HD model.

The Zi8 – which follows on the from January’s Zx1 and 2008’s Zi6 – can capture video at up to 1080p and features an integrated electronic image stabiliser that, according to Kodak, helps to produce sharper videos with less blur.
Although the Zi8’s form factor is almost identical to that of the previous two models, you will benefit from an ever-so-slightly larger display – 2.5in instead of 2.4in – and the ability to capture 5Mp “HD still pictures”.
All data’s stored onto SD memory cards of up to 32GB and the ubiquitous swing-out USB arm – which features on both the Zx1 and Zi6 – also features on the Zi8. Presumably the latest pocket camcorder has an HDMI port too, because Kodak’s promised to throw in an HDMI cable.

Dell release 23-inch 1080p ST2310 LCD, plus two business LCDs

Dell have discretely added three new monitors to their line-up, spanning 20- to 23-inches and sub-$230 price-tags. The largest is the 23-inch Dell ST2310, a Full HD 1,920 x 1080 panel with HDMI, DVI and VGA inputs, 250 nits of brightness, 5ms response time and 50,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. It also has a slimline bezel and audio in/out ports.

As for the 22-inch model, the Dell E2210H, and the 20-inch E2010H, they both slot into Dell’s business range, promising 1,920 x 1080 and 1,600 x 900 resolution respectively along with DVI and VGA connectivity. Each has a 1,000:1 contrast ratio and 250 CD/m2 brightness, together with 5ms response time and a tilt-adjustable stand.
All three LCDs are available to order now, with the consumer ST2310 priced at $229, the E2210H at $259 and the E2010H at $139. Don’t forget to budget for a DVI or HDMI cable, though, as Dell rather meanly only include a VGA cable.

Orange France launch LG GD910 watch-phone from $1,290

After months of speculation, Orange France have confirmed pricing for the LG GD910 watch phone. Originally tipped to cost in excess of £1,000 ($1,676), the GD910 has been listed on the carrier’s site from €399 ($573) with a new 12- or 24-month contract.
Update: Orange France have changed their press release, to confirm that the LG GD910 starts from €899 ($1,290) rather than €399 as it originally suggested.

Your money gets you a 1.43-inch tempered-glass capacitive touchscreen, front-facing video camera for making video calls, and both Bluetooth and high-speed HSDPA connectivity. Orange recently demonstrated some of the watch-phone’s functionality in a video.
The LG GD910 is available from Orange France now, to new subscribers and as an upgrade under the carrier’s “Change your mobile” scheme. Orange have already confirmed that the phone will see a UK release, but it’s unclear when in August that will take place.

640GB 2.5-inch, 2.5TB 3.5-inch HDDs in January 2010 says TDK

A new year usually brings short-lived resolutions and expensive gym membership, but according to TDK Corporation January 2010 will also see 640GB 2.5-inch and 2.5TB 3.5-inch hard-drives. The company stands a good chance of being right, too, as it manufacturers the read/write heads for several hard-drive makers; their roadmap shows a jump from the current mass-production of 250GB/platter 2.5-inch drive heads to 320GB/platter head production ramping up from this month to December 2009.
Since the average 2.5-inch hard-drive contains two such platters, that tips 640GB small-form-factor (SFF) drives with what’s likely to kick off with 5,400rpm speeds at the start of 2010. As for desktop 3.5-inch drives, TDK currently mass-produces heads for 500GB platters, but will start mass-production of 640GB/platter heads in November and ramping up to full production by the end of January 2010.
That pushes a standard 4-platter desktop drive up to 2.5TB, and if the manufacturer can squeeze in an extra platter then it hits 3TB from a single HDD. Upgraded laptop and desktop storage? That sounds like a much better new year’s resolution.

iriver E200 PMP officially launches

iriver’s latest PMP, the E200, has been detailed on the company’s site, and while it may lack a terribly-fashionable OLED display or support for Bluetooth headphones, it does look a solid, serviceable little chap. The E20 is available in 4, 8 and 16GB capacities, with a microSD slot content with up to 8GB cards, and measures just 10mm thick.

The display is a 2.8-inch QVGA 320 x 240 LCD, and connectivity includes USB for synchronizing and a 3.5mm socket for your headphones. File support includes MP3, WMA, OGG, ASF and FLAC audio, together with MPEG-4, Xvid, WMV, RM and RMVB video at up to 30fps. The E200 will also show JPEG, BMP, PNG or GIF images, record audio files and tune in to FM radio stations.
iriver are quoting up to 17hrs audio playback or 5hrs video playback from a single charge, and the whole thing weighs 94.1g. No word on pricing or release dates, but we’d imagine this to come in at around the same price – or less than – Apple’s iPod nano.

AgfaPhoto announced three brand new digital camera models today, the Optima 1, Optima 102 and Optima 100, which all expand the camera company’s digital offerings and sport some neat features.

The Optima 1 has a 12-megapixel sensor, 1080p support, blink recognition, face recognition, smile recognition and many other programs, a 5x wide angle zoom lens, and a 2.-inch LCD screen. You can even use the beauty mode which adds soft color tone to faces and covers imperfections.
Also announced was the Optima 102 which also has a 12-megapixel camera, 28 program modes, a 3-inch display, a 3x optical zoom and an ISO 3,200. The Optima 100 on the other hand has the 28 modes, but a 10-megapixel sensor, a 2.7-inch LCD screen and 3x zoom. You can get all three models in September for about $254, $212 and $183, respectively.

HP Mini 5101: solid netbooks on sale

HP’s sturdy, business-friendly Mini 5101 netbooks have gone on sale, priced from $399. Two models are available, the VJ907AA and the FM955UT, each with Intel’s Atom N280 1.66GHz processor, a 10.1-inch 1024 x 600 display and 1GB of RAM.
Curiously, in fact, the specifications listed for both netbooks are exactly the same, so we’re at a loss as to why the VJ907AA is $125 more than the FM955UT. Each has a 160GB hard-drive, GMA 950 graphics and a 2-megapixel webcam, while ports include three USB 2.0, VGA, audio in/out and ethernet, plus an SD card slot.
Networking includes gigabit ethernet, WiFi a/b/g/n and Bluetooth 2.0, the latter of which was initially said to be an option. The 4-cell battery is apparently good for up to 4.5hrs use, and the OS is Windows XP Home. We’re expecting HP to correct the listings and hopefully differentiate between the two models soon.

NEC moved into unchartered waters today by debuting their very first display capable of supporting DisplayPort. This new model is called the MultiSync EA231WMi and it measures in at 23-inches.

This new display features VGA and DVI along with the DisplayPort, to make for the greatest level of functionality. Also included is a multi-directional pad and an ambient light sensor.
With a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution, built-in stereo speakers, a 3,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and IPS, this display offers good color quality and features. It also has a four-port USB hub and the ability to rotate into portrait mode. You can get the NEC MultiSync EA231WMi starting later this month for $379.

Microsoft announced Windows 7 pricing: $120

This morning, Microsoft revealed the last major missing ingredient to Windows 7, the upcoming replacement for the flawed Windows Vista: what it will cost.
A post on the Redmond, Wash., company’s Windows Team Blog outlined four possible prices home users can pay in the United States:
* Starting tomorrow, if you buy a computer with Vista Home Premium, Business or Ultimate from a vendor participating in Microsoft’s Windows 7 Upgrade Option program, you’ll pay “little or no cost” for an upgrade to 7 when it ships Oct. 22. (In other words, if you were going to buy a new PC today, wait until tomorrow.)
* Also starting tomorrow, you’ll be able to pre-order an upgrade copy of Windows 7 Home Premium for $49.99 (with an upgrade of 7 Professional going for $99.99). But this pre-order deal only runs through July 11 or “until supplies last” in the U.S., whichever comes first. How many copies will be available before these supplies run out? That’s an excellent question…
* Otherwise, the upgrade edition of Windows 7 Home Premium will cost $119.99, $10 less than the $129.99 Microsoft charges for an upgrade to Vista Home Premium today. Upgrades to 7 Professional and 7 Ultimate will run $199.99 and $219.99. The usual upgrade path will be from Windows Vista to 7; published reports have indicated that Microsoft will also allow Windows XP users to buy 7 at the upgrade price–but they’ll have to wipe their hard drives before installing 7 and then reload their data and programs. (Run Microsoft’s free Upgrade Advisor application on your PC before contemplating any upgrade to 7.)
* A full, non-upgrade copy of 7 Home Premium will cost $199.99, with full copies of 7 Professional and 7 Ultimate going for $299.99 and $319.99.
Customers in the European Union, however, will face an extra wrinkle. In response to inquiries from EU regulators about including a choice of Web browsers in Windows 7, Microsoft decided to excise its Internet Explorer browser from the European version of Windows 7–which it’s now calling Windows 7 E. Today, Microsoft announced that it will sell a full version of 7 E at upgrade prices. But as ZDNet’s veteran Windows watcher Ed Bott warns, a normal upgrade won’t work with those copies–EU users will need to wipe their hard drives and do a clean install, just like XP users here. [Bott sent me a message on Twitter clarifying this point; you won't need to wipe your drive, and restoring your data won't be as tricky as I'd suggested.]
The reaction on the other side of the pond seems… less than charitable. (Sample word: “insane.”)

It would be, perhaps, too easy to write off the Mouse Blister as a gimmicky, ridiculous idea, and so we’ll leave any value judgement up to you. Intended to prevent your mouse from slipping out of your hand, shooting off across the desk or leaving you with a twisted, withered claw, the system consists of 25 self-adhesive pads that give the peripheral a “moth-eaten armadillo” appearance.
The pads are made from the same rubber you’d usually find on the hand-grips of motorcycles, only thicker and more tenacious. According to Mouse Blister themselves, they’ll help prevent “CTS & Tendonitus Symptoms associated with prolonged mouse use.”
Right now you’ll have to like black, as that’s the only color on offer, but they’re planning red, blue, yellow and white versions soon. Price is $8.99 for 25 pieces, and you even get free-shipping. Anybody tempted?

Sprint announce 3G/4G WiFi routers by Cradlepoint

Sprint have announced two 4G Mobile Broadband Routers, aimed at personal and business users, for both WiMAX and EVDO Rev.A connectivity. The Sprint Personal Hotspot PHS300S supports up to four simultaneous WiFi connections, while the Cradlepoint MBR-1000 Broadband Router supports up to 32; each rely on one of the carrier’s USB modems for their 3G/4G connection.

Obviously if you don’t live in one of the areas served by WiMAX, compatibiltiy with Sprint’s 4G service might not be such a big deal. The carrier already offers an EVDO Rev.A-only 3G WiFi modem in the shape of the MiFi 2200, which supports five WiFi clients – one more than the PHS300S – and integrates the modem, router and a battery.
However if the two new models appeal, you’ll be able to pick them up now. The Sprint Personal Hot Spot PHS300S is $159.99 and available in select Sprint retail stores within Sprint 4G markets, telesales, business sales and online, while the Cradlepoint MBR1000 broadband router is $249.99 and available via business sales, telesales and online.

LED-backlit HDTVs once were an expensive rarity, but that’s changing. Sharp Electronics’ new line of Aquos HDTVs offer the premium of LED backlighting. The advantage of LED backlighting: It can boost black levels and minimize power consumption, even while still providing a superior level of brightness.
The new 32- ($1,100), 40- ($1,700), 46- ($2,200) and 52-inch ($2,800) LE700-series Aquos LED TVs use Sharp’s UltraBrilliant LED backlighting technology, which features a full array of evenly spaced LEDs behind a diffusing panel. The 120-Hz TVs are rated for 4ms pixel-response rates, and have motion-smoothing dejudder technology. The TVs also have an immpressively wide angle of view, 176-degrees.
The LCD panels feature a pixel-control technology that reduces light leakage, thus enhancing blacks, and a wider aperture design that allows more light to pass through, thus improving brightness, according to Sharp. Not included, however, is a local dimming feature, which would allow the backlighting LEDs in a specific zone to be shut off as needed to further enhance blackness.
A Sharp spokesperson says Sharp intends the LE700 “to be a widely distributed series, offering the utmost in value to the consumer. Local dimming is a more expensive technology, so to keep the price low it’s not included in this series. [Sharp is] definitely looking into it for future models.” Local-dimming LED backlit ShArp TV’s are reportedly already available in Japan.
The new TVs are also power-aware. To help reduce power consumption in dim environments, they can detect ambient light and adjust brightness accordingly. The 40-inch and larger models come with Aquos Net, a collection of Web-based features such as news, sports, and weather reports; and Aquos Advantage Live, an online link that allows support technicians to remotely diagnose problems or otherwise configure the TVs.
Sharp also added two units to its snazzier-looking E77 series AQUOS LED TVs: the 65 inch LC-65E77UM ($4,500) and its first-ever 60-inch unit, the $3,500 LC-60E77UN. Both 120Hz 1080p units feature 4ms pixel response, black cabinets with gold highlights and Sharp’s Advanced Super View Superlucent Panel, which has a smoothed surface that reduces reflections, according to Sharp.
Built into all of the new LE700 and E77 series LCD TVs are four HDMI ports, two component video inputs and an RS-232C port for custom installations.

Another wave of DDOS attacks on South Korea

As expected, South Korea suffered a third wave of attacks at the tail end of the week, as malware infected PCs were reactivated in a massive botnet that launched attacks on government banking and media sites, according to new reports.
The Washington Post said the distribued denial of service (DDOS) attacks, which struck on Thursday evening, were much more widespread than at first predicted, with around half a dozen government sites including those of parliament, the Defense Ministry and the Foreign Ministry, slowed down or temporarily stopped from working.
The MyDoom virus was once again the root cause of the attacks, turning PCs into zombie computers capable of launching a coordinated DDOS attack on any sites selected by the hackers.
Although there were no major security breaches as a result of the attacks, there could yet be a new phase which sees data on tens of thousands of PCs targeted, according to a Telegraph report.
Lee Byung-cheol of South Korean web security firm, Ahnlab is quoted as saying, “The affected computers will not be able to boot and their storage files will be disabled.”
North Korea is not among the five countries listed by the Korean Communications Commission (KCC) where the attack could have originated, said the report.
The KCC said websites believed to be behind the attacks were actually hosted in Germany, Austria, Georgia, the US and South Korea, although the location of the hackers is unknown and North Koreans could still be responsible.

Sony Memory Stick XC details emerge

Sony revealed the last details about their Memory Stick XC today, which was first revealed at CES. This super high capacity memory stick uses the exFAT file system and some SDXC technology.
Apparently, you can hold up to 2TB of information on this thing and will be capable of transferring at speeds of 480Mbps or about 60MB/s using USB 2.0. This makes for some serious speed and flexibility.
These new memory sticks will use the same slot technology and will likely support older generation cards. It’s unclear what devices the Memory Stick XC will appear in first, but the cameras are the first likely target.

Toshiba finally drops HD DVD, will sell Blu-Ray player

Exactly a year and five months after Toshiba brought an end to the high-definition disc format war, the Japanese consumer electronics company confirmed its plans to produce its own Blu-ray Disc player. Previously, rumors trickled in about Toshiba considering such a move; Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun this weekend reported that Toshiba will adopt the format it once battled against.
The format war was vigorously fought, as Toshiba and Microsoft backed HD DVD, and Sony, Panasonic, and a consortium of consumer electronics companies promoted Blu-ray Disc. The winner of this battle would control over the lucrative, high-definition successor to the quarter-of-a-billion dollar standard-definition DVD business.
Toshiba withdrew HD DVD from the market in February 2008 after a series of crippling blows gave rival Blu-ray a clear edge. At the time, Toshiba indicated that, in the absence of HD DVD, it would instead pursue “a wide range of technologies that will drive mass market access to high definition content. These include high capacity NAND flash memory, small form factor hard disk drives, next generation CPUs, visual processing, and wireless and encryption technologies.”
Toshiba has certainly made strides with its video processing and cell processor. But none of the aforementioned technologies have yet to replace DVD players for home entertainment.

Now that LG have officially announced their latest Chocolate phone, the BL40, it seems the floodgates have opened for unofficial hands-on. Russian site mobile@mail.ru are the latest, offering up not only plentiful shots of the 4.0-inch 800 x 345 “cinema-like” touchscreen handset in its various menus and options pages, but alongside some of LG’s other recent marvels.

There’s also a quick shot or two of the BL40 fighting for the title of thinnest-handset with Nokia’s slender E71, together with feedback on the various features the 5-megapixel feature-phone offers. The S-Class UI LG are so fond of looks a little stretched, but their new split-pane additions – to suit the long, thin display on the BL40 – apparently work pretty well.
Generally the feedback is good, though we still can’t help but wish that LG had dropped Android onto this unusual device rather than their own, limited OS. The LG BL40 is tipped to arrive in Q3 2009 in 54 different countries; price tba.

The Logitech G-Series Gaming Mouse G500 takes the G5 mouse and throws in on-the-fly adjustable accuracy up to 5,700dpi, a more comfortable shape and a weight-adjustable body for improved hand-feel. It also has a “battle finish” which Logitech reckon will put you in the right frame of mind for a bout of online gaming.

Hitachi have propelled themselves to the top of the desktop hard-drive league with the launch of the Deskstar 7K2000, the world’s first 2TB 7,200rpm 3.5-inch HDD. Ousting Western Digital’s slower 5,400rpm version, the new Deskstar offers 32MB cache, a 3Gb/s SATA interface and 10-percent idle power savings over previous models.
In fact, the 2TB drive is merely the top end of the new Hitachi HDD range, the Deskstar 7K1000.C series, which offers models ranging from an altogether more modest 160GB. That new series will, Hitachi promise, deliver best-in-class efficiency, with 4.4W idling.
Unfortunately, what Hitachi have kept quiet – and what, you could argue, is the third most important detail after capacity and speed – is just how much the new Deskstar 7K2000 2TB will cost. We’re expecting the answer to that question to fall into the “a whole lot” category.

Google launches Chrome gallery

Google on Tuesday launched a gallery of 29 themes for Google Chrome. But Mozilla, while refraining from sniggering, boasted it’s now up to 20,000.

Cosmetic changes are, well, cosmetic, but a lot of people like them as a way to add some flair to their machines. Many had been pestering Google to add themes support even though Chrome employs a Spartan user interface without much acreage for artistry. Last week’s developer version of Chrome added a “Get themes” button in the Options dialog box, and now Google has flipped the switch to activate the Web page that button points to.The collection of themes includes Legal Pad, Star Gazing, Transparent (it’s not, on my Windows XP machine), Dots, and Pencil Sketch. One monochromatic theme called Minimal downloads nearly instantly, but Grass, at 1.3MB, takes more time.
Why so large? Themes can come with a background image that shows on Chrome’s new-tab page that offers a much greater chance for expressiveness, especially since that page is the default when Chrome launches. That could help Google with its attempt to recruit artists to supply their own themes, as some have done with the iGoogle customizable home page.Mozilla has its own skinning technology in the works, a plug-in called Personas that launched on Mozilla Labs in March. That head start, coupled with its vastly larger and more engaged external audience, gives it a big lead over Chrome when it comes to getting gussied up.Mozilla Labs announced Monday that Firefox now has 20,000 Personas, with 10,000 of them arriving in the last 10 weeks.

VIA EPIA N700-10EW Nano-ITX board scoffs at extreme temperature

VIA’s Nano-ITX boards have already acquired something of a following among people building tiny embedded computers, HTPC-style media streamers or other compact gadgets, but what happens if you want to take your media-PC-in-a-toaster to the nearest desert or mountain top? Step forward the VIA EPIA N700-10EW, an unassuming name for a low-power board capable of running in temperatures from minus 20-degrees centigrade to plus 70-degrees.

VIA envisage the N700 being popular with embedded systems engineers who need to install their computers into extreme conditions, but that doesn’t mean the board wouldn’t have plenty of uses for a more domestic user. Power is from the 1GHz VIA Eden ULV processor and the N700 also has the company’s VX800 media system processor, so it’s no slouch when it comes to performance. MPEG-2, MPEG-4, WMV9 and VC1 video playback is supported, as is DirectX9.
Ports include VGA, USB 2.0, two SATA, PCIe gigabit ethernet and a Type I CF slot, plus there’s an expansion header for plenty more I/O. No word on pricing as yet.

Vodafone Access Gateway femtocell announced

Vodafone UK have become the latest carrier to offer a femtocell, and the first in Europe to do so. The Vodafone Access Gateway connects to a subscriber’s home or office broadband connection and creates a local “3G cloud” of coverage; up to four Vodafone 3G handsets can use this at any one time, with their calls and data routed over the broadband.
Described as similar to the size of a router, Vodafone are yet to release images of the Access Gateway [image above via bandaancha], but we’re presuming it will be similar to Sprint’s AIRAVE and Verizon’s Wireless Network Extender in the US. As with those femtocells, users can choose to pay a monthly subscription for the Access Gateway – either inclusive in a contract plan, from £15 ($24) per month, or alone from £5 ($8) – but they’re also offering it as a one-off purchase for £160 ($260).
Customers can pre-select the devices that will be allowed access to the femtocell, via an online interface. Sales begin on July 1st.

ColorWare iPhone 3GS custom colors arrive

It’s unlikely to be taxing their production line all that much, but notorious ink-lovers ColorWare have announced they’ll be offering custom versions of the iPhone 3GS. As with other ColorWare creations, the end result can be as tasteful or as lurid as your morals allow.
The usual range of solid and metallic colors are available, and you can have your earphones dyed to match too. The basic process changes just the back-plate of the phone, but you can also customize the normally-chrome bezel, the home button and the SIM holder.
Pricing starts at $150 for the back, then add $20 each for the bezel frame and button, or $15 each for the SIM holder and earbuds. Currently there’s only the option to send in your own iPhone 3GS (in the US); ColorWare aren’t offering the smartphone themselves at this stage.

China limits Google because of porn

For the third time this year, the Chinese government has denounced Google (GOOG) for enabling users of its Chinese Web site to access pornographic Web sites. According to Reuters, the China Internet Illegal Information Reporting Center, a government-supported “watchdog” outfit, claimed yesterday that ”Google China has not conducted the oversight required according to China’s laws and regulations, and a large volume of foreign internet pornographic information has entered our borders through this website.” And this morning, the government finally did something about it.
According to the New York Times, the Chinese regime has disabled the drop-down function in Google’s search field, in which Google tries to guess what you’re searching for based on the first few characters you type.

Wireless modem Huawei E583X, competition for MiFi

We first heard about Huawei’s E583X wireless modem back in February, and now the company has been showing it off at CommunicAsia in Singapore. A MiFi rival, the E583X – also known as the i-Mo – packs an HSPA modem and WiFi router into a palm-sized battery powered box.
Runtime is tipped at up to 5hrs, after which the E583X recharges from a USB port. You can also leave it plugged in and use it as a standard USB modem, though only with that one computer. As with the MiFi it supports up to five simultaneous WiFi connections and has a microSD card slot, though the Huawei apparently only supports microSD access via direct USB connection, not by any WiFi client as on the MiFi.

I am not a big fan of Bluetooth headsets. I think they have their place, like when you are trying to drive in a manual transmission car. However, if you use one while say walking in the mall you should be kicked in the balls (or punched in the ovaries if more appropriate).
If you are into music on your phone, most go for ear buds because they are compact and don’t look as strange on your head as say your massive headphones from 1984. Nokia has announced a new Bluetooth headset called the BH-905 that is quite large. The massive size looks like something you would see with a home stereo rather than a mobile phone or MP3 player.
The huge headset supports stereo streaming music and has microphones (yes there are more than two) for placing and receiving calls. Bluetooth headsets with two mics are common today and a pair wasn’t good enough for Nokia. The BH-905 has two mics for picking up the user’s voice, and eight of them for picking up external sounds to be blocked. The headset will go on sale globally in August at about EUR 285.

LonMID M100 MID-phone officially introduced

Photos of LonMID’s M100 engineering prototype showed up before Computex, but now the convertible MID phone has made its official appearance on the company’s site. The obvious change is the color-scheme (the prototype was black and gold) but there are other differences too, not least the fact that the external phone keypad has been omitted.
Still, it’s a 6.2 x 3.5 x 1.1 inch chunk with a 4.8-inch WVGA touchscreen inside and a smaller, 2.4-inch QVGA display inside. Underneath there’s a flat panel which could use backlit, touch-sensitive buttons; LonMID haven’t released close-up images of the M100 turned on yet.

Research in Motion Ltd. (RIM) today unveiled the BlackBerry Tour smartphone, which Sprint Nextel Inc. separately said it will sell later this summer for $200 with a two-year service agreement and rebates.
Verizon Wireless will also sell the device, a spokeswoman confirmed, without revealing other details.
RIM and Sprint both emphasized the Tour will be a world phone that works on EV-DO Rev. A networks in North America, and can also connect to UMTS/HSPA and EDGE/GPRS/GSM networks overseas.
Both companies also both emphasized the Tour’s video and other media capabilities as well as its physical keyboard. The device is seen as competitive with both the iPhone 3G S launching on Friday and the Palm Pre, which launched June 6.

The state can only take 50% of Hackett’s month pay, and when divided twenty-one ways, it isn’t paying for much. He brought $400 to court with him. Court records indicate that he must pay the women a monthly sum ranging from $25 to $305. When his paycheck is garnished, these women are actually receiving an average of $1.98 per month.
Under the circumstances, it appears that the financial burden rests squarely on the shoulders of the good citizens of Tennessee….and their tax dollars.
Hatchett claims he wasn’t out to set a record. “I didn’t intend to have this many. It just happened.”

A US man found a quarter of a million dollars stuffed into carrier bags in the street - and handed it in.
David Jenks found the money - the equivalent of more than £150,000 - after popping out of his antiques shop one evening in Syracuse, New York state.
“I was walking out to my car for a clean shirt when I saw bags of trash on the side of the road,” he said.
When Mr Jenks went to move the bags, he realised they were filled with banknotes.
The bags are believed to have come from a Brinks armoured security vehicle.
Brinks managers are trying to determine how the money ended up on the side of the road, police said.

YouTube flooded with porn from competition

YouTube was busy deleting porn videos on Wednesday after users of forums at a rival site and an imageboard site declared a “Porn Day” campaign against the popular video service.
The forums at video site eBaum’s World and 4chan organized the mass porn “carpet bombing” on YouTube, according to Ars Technica. YouTube has been removing the videos as fast as it can, but even videos that are removed are still showing up in search results with explicit images in the thumbnails, the report said.
It could take a couple of days for all the explicit results to be removed from the search results, Google spokesman Scott Rubin told Ars Technica. As one might expect, the pornographic clips are being uploaded without any indication that they’re for adult eyes only, making them easy to happen upon by casual searchers. As the upload-fest has progressed, users are also uploading what seems to be legitimate content, but is in fact a porn video that simply has 20-30 seconds of non-porn content (a newscast, an interview) at the beginning.
In a phone interview with CNET News late on Wednesday, Rubin said that in addition to the porn videos were removed as soon as community members alert YouTube to them, certain channels where the posters were bragging about the campaign and listing the videos were being disabled.
“This group of pranksters thought it would be funny to load a bunch of porn to YouTube,” he said. “This is an unfortunate, and I think poorly directed, prank. I think our systems are doing really well at removing content that violates the guidelines.”

Chrome 2: 30% faster and more secure

Google’s Chrome browser is now faster and has gained the ability for users to hide thumbnails on its New Tab page. The update, internally called Chrome 2, is being automatically rolled out to current users and is also available for download, according to Chrome team member Darin Fisher, writing in the Google corporate blog.
According to Fisher, JavaScript-heavy pages now load 30 percent faster while embarrassing thumbnails can be 100 percent hidden. Which improvement users best respond to remains to be seen. The update also failed to address a common user complaint: There is still no Google for Macintosh, just Windows XP and Vista.
The updated version, was announced on Google’s company blog yesterday. Other improvements include form autofill and full screen mode, both already common in competing browsers.
Chrome has generated much greater interest than market share since its introduction last September, in part because it lacked popular features included in existing browsers. This update adds some of those, but mostly builds on Chrome’s speed claims.

Mobile phone sales globally dropped 9.4 % in the first quarter compared to the same quarter of 2008, while smartphone sales jumped 12.7% during the same period, Gartner Inc. reported today.
The decline in the first quarter was the biggest drop since Gartner began doing quarterly reports in 2001, the research firm said in a statement. Even so, Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi said there have been some signs of recovery in North America and China. Worldwide, according to Gartner, 269.1 million units of both smartphones and other phones were sold in the first quarter, a 9.4% decline from the 294.2 million sold in first quarter 2008.
Smartphone sales totaled 13.5% of all mobile device sales in the quarter, compared to 11% of the total for the same quarter last year. That translates into 36.4 million smartphones sold in the first quarter, up from 32.3 million that were sold in first quarter of 2008, a 12.7% increase in the number of smartphones sold.
Compared to overall mobile device sales, smartphone sales by RIM and Apple do not even rank in Gartner’s top five. For all mobile devices, Nokia was the leader, with 97.3 million sold, or 36% share; Samsung sold 51.3 million, for a 19% share. And LG, Motorola and Sony Ericsson were third through fifth, respectively. Motorola, which sold 30 million devices in the first quarter of last year, saw the biggest decline, selling just 16.5 million in the first three months of this year.Computerworld

Air Force warning: GPS can crash next year

Thanks in part to a lack of oversight, a government agency Wednesday warned that unless the U.S. Air Force is able to acquire new satellites soon, the Global Positioning Systen may crash by next year, wreaking havoc with the public and military operations.
According to a new report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), an overhaul of the 20-year-old system has been delayed until November, putting it three years behind schedule. The project is also over budget by $870 million from the original cost estimate of $729 million, for a total of approximately $1.6 billion.
“If the Air Force does not meet its schedule goals for development of GPS IIIA satellites, there will be an increased likelihood that in 2010, as old satellites begin to fail, the overall GPS constellation will fall below the number of satellites required to provide the level of GPS service that the U.S. government commits ,” the GAO stated in its report.
The problem is blamed in part on the fact that no one single authority is responsible for synchronizing all procurements and fielding related to GPS. In addition, funding has been diverted from ground programs to pay for problems in the space segment of the GPS program, according to the report.
The Air Force has also encountered “significant” technical problems that still threaten its delivery schedule, and has also struggled with a contractor, which was not named in the report.
The GAO said that the time period between the contract award and first launch for GPS IIIA was shorter than most other major space programs it reviewed.
“Though the contractor has had previous experience with GPS, it is likely that the knowledge base will need to be revitalized,” the GAO said. “The contractor is also being asked to develop a larger satellite bus to accommodate the future GPS increments and to increase the power of a new military signal by a factor of 10.”
The Department of Defense (DOD) develops and operates GPS, and an interdepartmental committee—co-chaired by DOD and the Department of Transportation—manages the US space-based positioning, navigation, and timing infrastructure, which includes GPS. The DOD also provides most of the funding for GPS. The Air Force is responsible for GPS acquisition, according to the report. “The Department of Defense continues to face cost overruns in the billions of dollars, schedule delays adding up to years, and performance shortfalls stemming from programs that began in the 1990s, and after that were poorly structured, managed and overseen,” said the GAO. “What sets GPS apart from those programs is that GPS had already been “done” before.”
However, the Air Force is not sitting by idly. It has taken steps to structure the new GPS IIIA program to prevent mistakes made on the IIF program. The agency also plans to invest more than $5.8 billion over the next five years in the GPS satellites and ground control segments.

GE plays with holographic lasers: 500 GB discs

GE said on Monday it has demonstrated micro-holographic storage material that one day could result in the ability to store 500 GB of data on a standard DVD-size disc.The technology, developed by GE Global Research, the technology development arm of the General Electric Co., differs from current optical storage such as Blu-ray and DVD, which store data only on the surface of the disc. Holographic storage stores data throughout the entire disk in multiple layers, increasing the density of the storage, GE said.
As a result, a single disc could possibly contain up to 500 GB of data, which GE said is the capacity of about 20 single-layer Blu-ray discs or 100 DVDs. Because the hardware and the format of GE’s holographic storage technology are similar to those of current optical storage technology, GE said that micro-holographic players will be backward read-compatible with existing CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs. GE is not the first to unveil holographic storage. InPhase Technologies, Longmont, Colo., currently produces holographic data storage drives and discs under its Tapestry brand that allow up to 300 GB of data to be stored on a single disc with a transfer rate of 20 MBps.
InPhase’s road map calls for an 800-GB disk with transfer rate of 80 MBps to be available in the next couple of years, followed by a version with a capacity of 1.6 TB per disc and a 120-MBps transfer rate. However, little has been heard about the technology from InPhase or from other companies such as Optware in Japan.

RIAA wins: family has to pay $7k after downloading mp3s

The case was originally filed against Patricia Santangelo, 46, a mother of five, who resides in Wappingers Falls, N.Y but was later dropped and re-filled against her two sons.
Rather than taking the settlement agreement the two sons and mother decided to fight the RIAA and nearly $15,000 was raised by online sympathizers to help fight the industry. The result, nearly 4 years later, is that the family will have to pay $7000.00 for songs downloaded that included “‘MMMBop’ by Hanson and ‘Beat It’ by Michael Jackson.
“We are pleased to have reached an agreement with the Santangelos,” Cara Duckworth, a spokeswoman for the R.I.A.A., said in an e-mailed statement. Asked how much had been spent to win the $7,000 settlement, and whether it was a victory, she said, “We don’t break out costs per case, and it’s not a question of it being ‘worth it’ or a ‘victory.’ ” The family decided to agree to the $7000 amount because the two sons are now in college and they need to control their costs as lawyer fees probably exceeded the 15,000 in donations.

Chinese teachers have to smoke 4.6M cigarrets a year

The Chinese county of Gong’an has launched a novel way of injecting funds into local coffers: it is ordering officials and teachers to smoke only the homegrown Hubei brand of cigarettes.
Those who fail to inhale and help work their way through the 230,000 packets of Hubei gaspers produced annually - and instead light up brands from other provinces or foreign cancer sticks - may be fined or even sacked, the BBC reports.
Hubei is apparently feeling the heat from rival companies, especially those from neighbouring Hunan province. Chen Nianzu, a “member of the cigarette market supervision team in Gong’an county, Hubei province”, explained to the Global Times: “The regulation will boost the local economy via the cigarette tax.”
The Beeb notes that around 350 million people in China smoke, including “more than half of all male doctors”, and many people are blissfully unaware of the health implications.
The powers that be have made some effort to clear the nicotine-laden fug hanging over China, and “recently started encouraging smokers to kick the habit”. Beijing, the BBC notes, went as far as to ban smoking in Beijing’s public buildings prior to the 2008 Olympic games.

21 year old Swedish hacker busted after attacking Cicso and NASA

A convicted Swedish hacker stands accused of cracking the security of NASA and Cisco in 2004. After a federal investigation, the 21-year-old now faces multiple charges here in the United States.A 21-year-old Swedish national was hit with a five-count indictment accusing him of hacking Cisco Systems and NASA in 2004.
Philip Gabriel Pettersson , aka “Stakkato”, was indicted May 5 on intrusion and trade secret theft charges after allegedly swiping Cisco Interwork Operating System code from the networking giant and then breaking into computers at the Ames Research Center and the NASA Advanced Supercomputing Division, located at Moffett Field, Calif.
The five-count indictment was announced by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Criminal Division and U.S. Attorney Joseph P. Russoniello for the Northern District of California. However, there are reports that officials in Sweden may try to prosecute Pettersson there.
According to the allegations in the DOJ indictment, Pettersson intentionally hacked into the Cisco computer system between May 12, 2004, and May 13, 2004, and stole some Cisco Internetwork Operating System code. Roughly a week later between May 19 and May 20, he allegedly hacked into NASA. He is also accused of doing it again Oct. 22, 2004.
According to reports, Pettersson was convicted in 2007 for hacking into the networks of multiple Swedish universities and ordered to pay $25,000 in damages.

We all know Google gets a lot of traffic. Just about everyone hits the Google search a few times a day. There are also a lot of Gmailers and Youtube users out there. Google’s other services generate a lot of hits as well..
But something that Labovitz points out is that Google has its hand in a lot more. Its Adsense and DoubleClick networks do display advertising on millions of websites. Its Web analytics runs on millions more. All of these sites were also affected by the outage.
These third party sites were also slowed down by Google’s outage because code embedded in their webpages needed to contact Google’s server. In instances when Google was slow or unavailable, the result was the webpage loaded slower, if at all.
Using this data, it was estimated that 5% of the Internet was unavailable or slow. While still relatively small, it does make Google’s growing significance in the Internet an issue.

Google increases share on search market

Google Sites remained the top search destination for Web surfers in April, with 9.5 billion searches throughout the month, according to data released Monday from comScore.
Google was the only major search to gain market share in April. The site was up 0.5 percent to land at 64.2 percent overall. Yahoo and Microsoft came in at 20.4 percent and 8.2 percent respectively, both down 0.1 percent. Ask.com remained flat at 3.8 percent of the market, followed by AOL, which was down 0.3 percent to 3.4 percent.
Overall core search queries were up 3 percent to 14.8 billion. Google was up 4 percent to 9.5 billion, followed by Yahoo (up 2 percent to 3 billion), Microsoft (up 1 percent to 1.2 billion), Ask (up 3 percent to 563 million), and AOL (down 6 percent to 496 million).
Factoring in things such as mapping, local directories, and other “expanded” searches, Google Sites had 13 billion searches, up 5 percent from March. Yahoo came in second with 3.2 billion, followed by Microsoft with 1.3 billion and AOL with 795 million.

Napster still alive, price down to $5 a month

Digital music supplier Napster said on Monday it is slashing its monthly subscription price to $5 and adding downloads of songs to its streaming service in a bid to expand its customer base and compete with Apple Inc’s iTunes. It is the latest attempt by Napster to take on iTunes, the dominant digital music leader, and its first major strategic move since being taken over by retailer Best Buy Co Inc last October. Los Angeles-based Napster said users can now get unlimited access to stream music from its library of 7 million songs and five free songs for download every month for a subscription fee of $5.
Previously, Napster had charged subscribers $12.99 for a streaming-only service. Napster will roll out an in-store marketing campaign across Best Buy’s 1,031 stores in the United States. “We’ve worked very closely with our label partners to come up with a re-engineered economic structure that is a win-win for everyone starting with consumers,” said Chris Gorog, Napster’s chief executive.

Software piracy costs $50 billion a year, according to BSA

A report released Tuesday claims that 20 percent of PC software within the United States is pirated – and that that rate is still the lowest in the world.
The sixth revision of a joint study between the Business Software Alliance and IDC found that that Armenia, Bangladesh, Georgia, and Zimbabwe are the countries with the highest amounts of piracy, topping 90 percent. Worldwide, the rate of software piracy rose from 38 percent to 41 percent, because of the increase of Internet users in high-piracy locations such as China and India, the report found. Software piracy within the U.S., meanwhile, has remained flat. Setting the effects of exchange rates aside, the report found that the estimated losses from software piracy grew by 5 percent to $50.2 billion.
In 2005, however, The Economist published a critique of the BSA/IDC methodology, concluding that the study’s results were exaggerated. BSA and IDC representatives were not immediately available for comment.
The report comes against a backdrop of widespread crackdowns on sites that have used the BitTorrent protocol to disseminate software, movies, and music. Both Sweden’s The Pirate Bay and The Netherlands’ Mininova are facing down prosecutors intent on shutting both sites down; the operators of The Pirate Bay were found guilty of infringement, but said they would appeal.
In 2008, the rate of PC software piracy dropped in 57 countries, remained the same in 36, and rose in the remaining 17, the study found. Lowering global piracy by just one point a year would add $20 billion in stimulus to the IT industry, the BSA claims.
“We are continuing to make progress against PC software piracy in many countries, which helps people working in the US-led global software industry. That’s the good news,” said BSA president and chief executive Robert Holleyman, in a statement.
“The bad news is that PC software piracy remains so prevalent in the United States and all over the world,” Holleyman said. “It undermines local IT service firms, gives illegal software users an unfair advantage in business, and spreads security risks. We should not and cannot tolerate a $9 billion hit on the software industry at a time of economic stress.”
The regions of the world with the least piracy include both North America and the European Union; the countries with the lowest piracy as measured by the study include the United States, Japan, New Zealand, and Luxembourg, all near 20 percent.

HP recalls 70,000 laptops, danger of battery fire

The story that refuses to die gets another chapter this week, as Hewlett-Packard is recalling 70,000 notebook batteries due to a potential fire hazard. Two batteries in the recall pool have already gone up in flames, so this isn’t a theoretical risk but one that should be taken seriously if you have an affected system. The packs were sold both bundled with new laptops and as aftermarket replacement batteries in a wide range of outlets, including HP’s online shopping sites and third-party retail outlets.As well, the batteries included in the recall cover a wide range of notebooks under numerous HP brands, including HP Pavilion, HP Compaq, Compaq Presario, and the plain-old HP line.

To find out if your HP notebook is affected, check the model number on the service label on the bottom of your laptop or the LCD bezel. Those potentially affected include these machines:

We have a CAM version of this movie posted before, here is a DVDRip quality video from CaRRe. “The Secret of Moonacre” is a film adaptation of the novel “The Little White Horse” by Elizabeth Goudge. Directed by Gabor Csupo, it stars Dakota Blue Richards in the lead role as Maria. Personally I’m not a fan of this type of movie, but you may just like it, check it out!

Microsoft Office 2010 (previously referred to by its codename Office 14) is the next version (as of April 2009[update]) of the Microsoft Office productivity suite for Microsoft Windows. It entered development during 2006 while Microsoft was finishing work on Microsoft Office 12, which was released as the 2007 Microsoft Office System. The major version number 13 has been skipped, presumably due to aversion to the number 13.It was previously thought that Office 2010 (then called Office 14) would ship in the first half of 2009, but Steve Ballmer has officially announced that Office 2010 will ship in 2010. According to an article published in InfoWorld in April 2006, Office 2010 will be more “role-based” than previous versions. The article cites Simon Witts, corporate vice president for Microsoft’s Enterprise and Partner Group, as claiming that there would be features tailored to employees in “roles such as research and development professionals, sales persons, and human resources.” Borrowing from ideas termed “Web 2.0″ when implemented on the Internet, it is likely that Microsoft will incorporate features of SharePoint Server in Office 2010.

Improving performance is one of Microsoft’s design goals with Windows 7, and many early reviewers have said that the new OS seems peppier than Vista. But tests of the Windows 7 Release Candidate in our PC World Test Center found that while Windows 7 was slightly faster on our WorldBench 6 suite, the differences may be barely noticeable to users.
We loaded the Windows 7 Release Candidate on three systems (two desktops and a laptop) and then ran our WorldBench 6 suite. Afterward we compared the results with the WorldBench 6 numbers from the same three systems running Windows Vista. Each PC was slightly faster when running Windows 7, but in no case was the overall improvement greater than 5 percent, our threshold for when a performance change is noticeable to the average user.
The largest difference was 4 points–102 for Vista versus 106 for Windows 7 on an HP Pavillion a6710t desktop. Our other two test machines showed similarly minor performance improvements: A Maingear M4A79T Deluxe desktop improved by 1 point (from 138 on Vista to 139 on Windows 7), and a Dell Studio XPS 16 laptop improved by 2 points, from 97 on Vista to 99 on Windows 7.

Brits would rather cut back on food than Internet access, says the mobile carrier O2. According to research by the ISP and mobile network operator, 67 percent of families are reluctant to reduce their spending on Internet access when it comes to beating the credit crunch, while only 24 percent said they didn’t want to reduce their food spending.
O2 also revealed that 40 percent of families admit to spend 10 percent of their household budget on technology and 57 percent said they still intend to purchase gadgets, despite the credit crunch, as long as they are value for money.
